Cyclone Space Mining: NASA RMC Team
Outreach accounts for 25% of the total points in the RMC because of how important STEM education is to NASA and the world. We strive to share our message to inspire the next generation of Engineers and Innovators!
Duties Performed: - Developed events for STEM education, reaching over 10,000 potential engineers in the midwest - Educated collegiate engineering students in educational and networking settings - Coordinated with student organizations and university personnel before and during events |
Critical Tinkers
A lighted throwing disk modeled as a replica of the disks seen in the movie TRON: Legacy in which the hole in the center of the disk holds the receiver coil for Wireless Power Transmission.
Duties Performed: - Delegated and assisted 6 fellow members in multidisciplinary year long design project - Lead design with aid from professors and industry professionals to create an innovative product - Translated ideas into reachable goals, managing full product life cycle

Cardinal and Rube Goldberg Club
The Cardinal and Rube Goldberg Club builds a Machine each year for the official Rube Goldberg Competition. The goal of the Machine is to have as many intermediate transfers of energy as possible within time and space constraints to ultimately perform a mundane task. This is a very unique challenge for an engineer as no components can be custom made, no object can be used for its intended purpose, and efficiency will reduce your score. The way to succeed is to foster creative thinking and improvisational engineering to take whatever you are given and create something new.
|
The Club's 2nd Machine was brought to Purdue and competed among 5 other Universities.
Duties Performed: - Organized a schedule and priorities for an unprecedented team and met long term deadlines - Aided the creative process by coaching student’s ideas into the greater design of the machine - Welcomed new members by creating a positive atmosphere where critical thinking is paramount |
Tau Beta Pi - Engineering Honor Society
Most Honor societies are simply a check in the mail, however Tau Beta Pi is different. The Iowa Alpha chapter requires a full semester as an active member of the organization before Induction. This simple policy serves as proof that TBP initiates are Commited and Proactive in addition to being Academically Successful.
The design committee, in which Charlie took part, partnered with Genesis Development in Des Moines, Iowa to create a custom assistance tool for a person with a Cerebral Palsy. Genesis Development is a firm that works with disabled persons to arrange for them part-time work appropriate to their ability level. For the committee, the goal was to design a simple device to allow the client to more easily and accurately fold towels for hotels, without taking away the contribution of the client. The project served as a masterclass for identifying and justifying all assumptions within the design process. We, as able-bodied individuals, needed to put ample time and energy into sympathizing with a client very different from ourselves. |
Improv Comedy Club
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. |
Well then it's a good thing that Jack is the Sharpest Pencil in the box! All the other pencils hate him because he never shuts up about how sharp he is. Then one day a mechanical pencil showed up and...
Charlie joined the ISU Improv Comedy club because it sounded like fun. In his time there he has found many lasting friends and gained skills in Non-Verbal Communication, Teamwork, and Thinking Outside the Box.
